Llevant: Mallorca’s east with Manacor, Artà and Capdepera

IN SHORT

Llevant is the east of Mallorca, with Manacor, Artà, Capdepera and Cala Rajada, with sandy beaches, coves, cliffs and the mountains of the Serres de Llevant. Near Porto Cristo lie the caves dels Hams and del Drach, and in Capdepera there’s a fortified site from the 14th century. Without a car, the T3 train from Palma takes you to Manacor in around 70 minutes.

SOFIA’S TIPS

What I’d tell you.

  1. For Manacor, the T3 train is your best bet. According to the timetable it runs all year round, while the buses from Palma run on the summer timetable until 31 October.

  2. Plan your trip around a market day: Mondays in Manacor, Tuesdays in Artà, Wednesdays in Capdepera, Saturdays in Cala Rajada.

  3. For the caves near Porto Cristo, check times and tickets directly with the operator. Sofia deliberately doesn’t give prices here.

  4. In the nature park near Artà, stay on the paths. The Albarca, es Verger and s’Alqueria Vella estates are part of the protected area.

  5. If you have a dog, ask at the town hall before your beach day. Sofia hasn’t yet checked an official dog zone for this coast.

What makes the east special

The Consell de Mallorca describes the Llevant as an area with a valuable cultural heritage and landscapes ranging from sandy beaches and coves to cliffs, fields and the mountains of the Serres de Llevant. It calls Manacor the city of pearls and furniture, also known as the birthplace of Rafa Nadal.

In Porto Cristo lie the Coves dels Hams and the Coves del Drac. Further north come Sa Coma and Cala Millor. On the way to Capdepera lie the Coves d’Artà and the beach at Canyamel. Capdepera has a fortified site from the 14th century, and right next to it is Cala Rajada with its beaches and fishing harbour. In Artà, the old town and the Santuari de Sant Salvador are worth seeing.
