SOFIA’S TIPS

What I’d tell you.

  1. Pick one place per trip. Valldemossa and Deià are on the same line 203, so they go well together.

  2. Check the last bus back before you set off. You’ll find the timetables on TIB, and some lines run less often at weekends.

  3. Look out for the dry stone walls. These very terraces and waterways are the reason for the World Heritage title.

  4. Plan your trip around a market day: Saturdays in Sóller, Sundays in Valldemossa or Pollença.

  5. Before a walk, take a quick look at the AEMET weather warnings for the Balearics.

What makes the cultural landscape special

The Consell de Mallorca names three UNESCO criteria for the Serra. It shows the exchange between Muslim and Christian cultures: from the 13th century, Arab water management met the land organisation of the Christian conquerors. The result was farming on terraces with dry stone walls, channels and cisterns, with fruit trees, gardens and olive groves, later organised into large country estates, the possessions.

You’ll find more on the history of this landscape in the guide “Serra de Tramuntana: understanding Mallorca’s cultural landscape”.
